"The Best" High Capcity Handgun review

I want to know the opinion of gunbloggers on high capacity handguns. I seriously doubt we will be able to pinpoint "the best one" but I hope to broaden my own views on the subject a lot more! I am going to throw in a few names and links of high capacity handguns just to start off. And if you have any input, please post a comment!!!

Glock:
Known to everybody because of the popularity with the law enforcement, Glock's in general are known as "the poor man's uzi" with their 30 rd (depending on the caliber) magazines that stick way out the bottom of the handle.

Springfield XD:
Probably the most over advertised handgun of all time! I don't think I even need to describe the Springfield XD!

Para Ordinance:
The Para Hi-Cap Pistols are in my opinion the most beautiful, classic high capacity pistols made. Para Ordinance is most well know for making 1911 style guns for law officers that love carrying 1911's but are restricted by the department they work for to only carrying a certain round, double action only, or at least has to have double action optional. Para sells 9mm's that carry 19 rounds, 40 s&w 16 rounds and their .45 ACP carries 14 rounds.
Bushmaster Carbon 15:
The Bushmaster Carbon 15 comes in 9mm and .223. This is typical known as an "AR-15 Pistol" the .223 model takes AR magazines. The thing is there are laws that really restrict the building of these weapons, the main four being that you cannot have more than 2 of the following restrictions in violation.
  1. an ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip.
  2. a threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward hand grip or silencer.
  3. a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned.
  4. a manufactured weight of 50 ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded. a semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm.

because of these restrictions Bushmaster makes their Carbon 15 with a composite frame.

Kel-Tec PLR-16:
Also an "AR pistol" this Kel-tec PLR-16 is in many ways like the bushmaster Carbon 15, only about $350 cheaper. This is definitely a cheaper AR pistol than the Bushmaster too.

I know there are several other High Capacity pistols, but I will leave them for you to bring to the table. All the above mentioned handguns can be found for sale on Gunbroker.com

Jon and Adam,
I know this is a little 'late', since your article "Best High Capacity Handguns" was posted in early September, 2007 and it's now late October. But I was reviewing my stats and found someone had linked to Cogito Ergo Geek from here, which allowed me to track back and find your blog. (Thanks for the link.)

Yes, I do have a few comments.

You declined to define what you mean by "The Best", so I am going to assume that you mean the highest quality of firearm and the best service from the manufacturer.

My answer, based on personal experience, is that STI makes the best 'high capacity' handguns in the world, bar none.

I compete in IPSC competition (see: USPSA), where both Limited and Open divisions feature high-capacity (more than 10 rounds allowed) handguns.

In Limited Division, I use the STI Edge in 10mm (because I scorn the .40 Short and Wimpy caliber), which allows between 18 and 20 rounds to be loaded in a magazine. Limited division is restricted to magazines of 140mm length.

In Open, you can use 170mm magazines. I shoot the Competitor race gun, my sweetie SWMBO shoots a Tru-Bore. In .38 Super caliber, that allows from 25 to 30 rounds, depending on the follower and the basepad.

These are both excellent firearms, both in quality and what you get for your money ... which is not inconsiderable. Well, you get what you pay for.

(see www.stiguns.com for specs.)

There are other 'niche' manufacturer of comparable handguns.

Para-Ordnance makes some good guns. They have been rumored to have some quality control and specs problems. Same with Caspian.

SVI (Strayer-Voigt) is most nearly comparable to STI, but their customer service is spotty.

STI rates highest in my estimation because they meet the highest standards of quality control and customer service.

.... in my humble opinion.

Sorry about not clarifying on what I meant by "the best" Hi-Cap pistol. What I value most in any handgun is reliability, & accuracy.
